Evora Copeland Spratley

January 29, 1949 – July 24, 2024

Evora – a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend – passed away on Wednesday, July 24th, 2024. Evora succumbed to complications caused by cancer, which returned suddenly and aggressively following remissions in 2013 and 2021. As always, she faced her challenges with a level of strength (… and stubbornness) that was truly unmatched.

Evora, who was affectionately known as “Baby Sis” by many, was born in Newport News, Virginia to her mother Ora Lee (“Sis”). She was a proud graduate of Huntington High School, where she met her husband of 49 years – Herbert. Evora went on to attend Virginia State University and Norfolk State University. With adventurous spirits, Herbert and Evora moved to Atlanta, Georgia before settling in Houston, Texas.

Evora worked as a homemaker and, later, in various roles within the Spring Independent School District. After more than 20 years with the district, she retired as a secretary. Through it all, Evora made it a priority to attend every sporting event and performance each of her children – Cory (b. 1975), Kalisha (b. 1978), and Courtney (b. 1988) – were involved in.

She was an avid decorator and gardener who took great pride in her home and yard. Her family will forever remember her for her “can do” attitude for all tasks, whether they were familiar to her or not.

Evora was preceded in death by her daughter, Kalisha (2012); husband, Herbert (2021); and mother, Ora Lee (2023). She is survived by her son, Cory; daughter, Courtney; son-in-law, Derek; and grandson, Christian.

Per Evora’s wishes, her ashes – along with the ashes of her daughter, husband, and mother – will be spread off of the coast of Virginia. An exact date, time, and location are yet to be determined but will be shared when they are available.

To further honor Evora, please take the time to share this webpage with anyone who may be interested. Tributes to Evora and messages to her surviving family members are also welcomed in the comment section at the bottom of this page

I am at a complete loss of the reality, my best neighbor is no longer with us. We grew from neighborly to family in a short time period. She always watched out for us as we did for her. There are not enough words to express how I am missing and going to miss her. Always in my heart ❀️

Hello, just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge and celebrate the life of Evora Copeland Spratley. She was the wife of my cousin Herbert Spratley. I did not get to know her well, but she visited our family home many times with Herbert and I found her to be a beautiful person and a wonderful soul. I also celebrate her because she grew up in the proud and honorable time of downtown Newport News Virginia, and she was a “Mighty Mighty Viking,” graduate of Huntington High School. I could tell that she was a strong, intelligent and classy woman in her own right; that she was a great wife, a great mother and a great example. I know that she will be missed and cherished by all who knew her well. Rest in peace Evora. Enjoy eternity in paradise. Signed, Reverend Michael C Worsley
